Although a lot of bacteria are harmful (called pathogens), there are also helpful bacteria. Bacteria is used for agriculture and it helps food production of yogurt cheese, beer, and wine. Yeast is a bacteria that helps produce yogurt, cheese, beer and wine. Viruses are helpful in medicine. Fungi can produce antibiotics (penicilin). Bacteria can be used to produce vaccines or antibiotics also. Microbes can also be helpful in decomposing waste, like bacteria. Some microorganisms decompose organic material like in septic tanks and garbage dumps. Compost heaps rely on bacteria to break down food scraps into soil for other plants and animals to use.
